Refund timing: what the IRS says
- The IRS states that most refunds for e-filed returns with direct deposit are issued in less than 21 days, though some take longer.
- By law, refunds for returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit cannot be issued before mid-February.
- The “Where’s My Refund?” tool on irs.gov is generally updated once a day; you need your SSN or ITIN, filing status and exact refund amount.
- Paper returns take considerably longer to process than e-filed returns.
- Refunds can be reduced or held to pay certain past-due federal or state debts; the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends a notice if that happens.
